ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System (QMS)

The quality management system (QMS) standard ISO 9001:2008 is one of the most popular international management standards. It provides a harmonized methodology for building, sustaining and improving quality performance.

ISO 9001:2008 is a universal standard that is applicable to every kind of organization in all spheres of human services – production, commerce, healthcare, education, local and national government. The requirements of this standard are followed in more than 160 countries all over the world.

The aim of this standard is to help organizations in their effort to establish quality management.

In order to fulfill this aim ISO 9001:2008 is based on 8 quality management principles.

  • Principle 1Customer focused organization – every organization depends entirely on its customers. Customers` satisfaction is vitally important for company’s success.

  • Principle 2 Leadership – the leaders in the organization create a unity of purpose and direction and motivate the employees in the organization to follow its politics and aims.

  • Principle 3 Employee engagement- employees at all levels are the essence of an organization. Their full involvement will enable their abilities to be used for the organization's benefit.

  • Principle 4 Process approach – In order to achieve desired results and objectives more efficiently, an organization should manage its activities and their related resources as a process.

  • Principle 5 - System Approach to Management – an organization works much more effectively when a system approach to management is used. An organization's effectiveness and efficiency can be improved by identifying, developing, managing and controlling these processes so as to achieve the organization's objectives and targets.

  • Principle 6 - Continual Improvement – in order to be successful an organization has to strive continually to become better in its sphere. Continual improvement should become an objective of every individual in the organisation.

  • Principle 7 - Factual Approach to Decision Making – right management decisions are taken after a logical analysis of proved information which is based on facts.

  • Principle 8 - Mutually Beneficial Supplier Relationships - Although organisations and their suppliers are independent, mutually beneficial relationships or strategic alliances will enhance the ability of both the organisation and its suppliers to create value.

QMS - ISO 9001:2008 ensures continual improvement and is focused on processes and customer satisfaction rather than procedures. The standard implies emphasis on process management, measurement and greater top management involvement.
